Qualification
The full Health and Safety Executive approved First Aid at Work course, in accordance with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
Course Overview
Qualified holders of this First Aid at Work certificate comply with the workplace and Health & safety legislation as First Aiders.
They are trained to provide both immediate emergency response and provide all required care until the arrival of the emergency services.
The First Aid at Work course is run over three days and includes both theory and practical sessions.
Outline of Programme
The First Aid at Work Syllabus Includes the full EFAW contents and additionally add much greater depth and practice in the following areas:
- Managing Incidents, record keeping and reporting
- Emergency responses and safety assessments
- First Aid Priorities and Examination of a Casualty
- Basic Life Support & Resuscitation - CPR and saving lives
- Choking Casualties
- Unconsciousness and causes
- Control of Bleeding, Wound Dressings and First Aid Kits
- Shock, Fractures, Burns and Scalds
- Common Illnesses, Seizures, Eye Injuries, Heart Attacks
- Regulations and Recording & Reporting accidents/incidents
Assessment
Candidates are independently and formally examined on the final afternoon of the course, with brief practical assessment scenarios and verbal questions. Successful completion of the assessments will secure their certificate, which is then valid for three years.

- Designed for: All employees / anybody who wishes to gain the formal First Aid qualification
- Course duration: Three full days (minimum of 18 hours teaching - excluding breaks and extra practice)
- Upon successful completion certification is valid for three years
Important Information
Upon successful completion of these HSE courses, first aiders receive certification to allow them to practice for three years, after which re-qualification is required.
In line with the revised First Aid Guidance issued on 1st October 2009, the
HSE strongly recommends that First Aider Skills are updated
by attending an HSE recommended annual refresher.
